Europa League Playoffs – 2nd Leg – 23rd February

Frustration isn’t the word with last weeks acca tips. I hit 3/4 in the Champions League and then followed that with 3/4 in the Europa League too, hitting 6/8 games, but not landing a win.

Suffice to say, that while the wins on the single bets mean I don’t make a loss, the frustration of missing out on some cracking bonus accumulator wins that would have totalled well over £700 in total last week, is at least giving me confidence that I am judging the game well enough as even the ones that didn’t go my way, were very close to doing so.

So for my second set of tips this week I am back with the Europa League and this time it is the playoff second leg ties, with the winning team from each of the eight ties this week going into the Round of 16 to be drawn against one of the eight group winners from the Europa League earlier on this season.

The current state of play in the Europa League ties from last week is as follows:

  • Midtjylland (1) v (1) Sporting Lisbon
  • PSV Eindhoven (0) v (3) Sevilla
  • Nantes (1) v (1) Juventus
  • AS Monaco (3) v (2) Bayer Leverkusen
  • AS Roma (0) v (1) Red Bull Salzburg
  • Manchester United (2) v (2) Barcelona
  • Rennes (1) v (2) Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Union Berlin (0) v (0) Ajax Amsterdam

As you can see there is still plenty to play for across almost every game with perhaps Sevilla’s 3-0 first leg lead being the only game that seems to be settled ahead of the second leg, although you can never rule out a team like PSV Eindhoven staging a surprise comeback.

Here’s my tips for Thursday night’s game and lets hope we get that final bit of luck to push us to a winner sooner rather than later!

Bet Analysis: Thursday 23rd February

AS Monaco (3) v (2) Bayer Leverkusen – Home Win

An entertaining first leg tie between these two saw the in-form AS Monaco come away with a win thanks to a 92nd minute winner. Bayer Leverkusen will be frustrated that their leaky defence once again saw them lose a game that they had previously been winning, despite going a goal down early in the game. However, the second leg could be more problematic for the German team as they face a Monaco side who are very strong at home, having beaten PSG 3-1 at their home stadium of late. Leverkusen’s leaky back line is a concern here and as such I think Monaco are set for a solid win.

Nantes (1) v (1) Juventus – Away Win

I must admit that I was surprised by how well Nantes did in the away leg here as their domestic form is pretty poor and Juventus are a very good team, despite them being some way behind Napoli in the Serie A table. So this makes this second leg a trickier one to predict than I originally expected and a tie I thought would be over is now in the balance. That said, I think Juventus are the team to back here. They are more than capable of securing a win on the road and are well used to counter attacking which I feel may well suit them more than trying to be the aggressor in the game. As such, I am pretty confident that Juventus will land the win here.

Man Utd (2) v (2) Barcelona – Home Win

The first game between these two teams was a fabulous encounter at the Nou Camp with Barcelona taking the lead, Man Utd striking back to claim the lead themselves before the home side snatched the draw (and almost a win) in the latter stages of the game. The quality of football on show would have graced the Champions League and it means that we head into this game with both sides level. At home, Manchester United have been in exceptional form of late and Marcus Rashford is in the best form of any striker in Europe since the World Cup and he is going to be a nightmare for the Barcelona defence to stop. This won’t be easy and it may take a late goal to win it, but I am backing Man Utd to claim the win here.

Union Berlin (0) v (0) Ajax Amsterdam – Home Win

The final game in this set of tips is on this delicately poised game with both Union Berlin and Ajax still scoreless after a tight first leg. Make no mistake here, Ajax may be the team with the much larger European pedigree, but this season Union Berlin have been right at the top of the Bundesliga table and at present, they lie third on goal difference alone behind the top two Dortmund and Munich (all three teams on 43 points). So, given they have also beaten Bayern Munich this season, we can assume that Ajax are not the obvious pick here. I do feel the Dutch will score a goal as they are better on the counter attack, but I am not sure it will be enough as my gut feeling is that Union Berlin will claim the win here by the odd goal in three.
