Europa League Quarter Finals 2nd Leg Acca – 20th April

We were so close to landing this accumulator bet last week as only the Bayer Leverkusen v Union St. Gilloise game let me down and having watched the highlights back of that game, Leverkusen really should have won it having missed some gilt-edged chances in that game.

So while that is frustrating, it is good to know that I was very close to another acca win here and hopefully I can land that elusive win here with this set of tips for the second leg of the quarterfinals.

The first leg ties produced a number of very cagey games and it is fair to say that all eight teams will feel that they are in with a good chance of progressing into the semifinals.

Juventus  hold the advantage in their tie, though only by a single goal margin, after they beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in Turin which sets up an intriguing second leg in Lisbon on Thursday.

Feyenoord also hold a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg against AS Roma, but Jose Mourinho’s side will be fired up to win the second leg in a competition that the Portuguese manager last won with Manchester United a few years ago.

The other two ties are all-square after the first legs with Leverkusen and Union St. Gilloise drawing 1-1 in Germany, while Manchester United conceded two late goals to draw with Sevilla setting up a very tricky second leg for the Mancunians in southern Spain.

I’m willing to bet there weren’t too many tipsters going with the draw in that game, but I did say that would be the case last week!

Anyway, let’s crack on now with our look at how things will go in these crucial second leg ties on Thursday.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 20th April

AS Roma (0) v (1) Feyenoord  – Home Win

A tight first leg in Rotterdam saw the home side land a 1-0 win, but they now face the task of defending that lead in Rome against a home side that are going to be fired up, knowing that this is their best chance of silverware this season. It is fair to say that Jose Mourinho hasn’t quite worked the magic he would have wanted at AS Roma since becoming the manager, but this offers him a chance to win the trophy he last won a couple of years ago with Manchester United. Feyenoord are a very tough team to beat, they have lost just once in the Eredivisie, but they have been beaten twice in the Group Stages of this competition and I think Roma will feel that they can at least match if not better the 1-0 win that Feyenoord had here on their home patch. I think Roma will not just win, but win by enough of a margin to progress into thes semi-finals here.

Sevilla (2) v (2) Manchester United – Draw

Sevilla will no doubt feel somewhat fortunate to come away from Old Trafford with a draw, given to them through two deflected own goals, but there is something about Sevilla and this competition which means you can never rule them out. The Spanish side will also be more comfortable in the home leg of this game, but I also feel Manchester United won’t have any worries having already picked up good results in Spain against Real Betis, Real Sociedad and Barcelona on their way through. I think a draw is a likely outcome here for the 90 minutes and I would not be surprised to see extra time or penalties needed to decide the winner.

Sporting Lisbon (0) v (1) Juventus – Away Win

Sporting Lisbon came away from the away leg on the back of a 1-0 defeat and they will fancy their chances at home against a Juventus side that were somewhat fortunate to win that game, given the amount of possession and chances that Lisbon created. However, I would caution against expecting a Lisbon win here. Juventus have been better away from home, than at home, in this competition and that makes this a tough game for Lisbon. The more they push, the more Juventus can catch them on the break. That is how I see this game going and as Lisbon push on, I see Juventus catching them on the break with a sucker punch goal which I think will deflate the home side.

Union St. Gilloise (1) v (1) Bayer Leverkusen – Draw

You have to hand it to Union St. Gilloise, they have produced some fantastic results against good teams in this competition while also challenging for the league title in Belgium and their draw in Leverkusen means that they have a great chance of making the semifinals here. The problem they face is that Leverkusen are a team that can come back from a poor home display to win on the road, as they did earlier in the knockout phase when losing 3-2 to Monaco at home, reversing that away from home into a 3-2 away win which they then won on penalties. I see another very close game here and I think that this is the most likely of the games in this stage of the competition to go to extra time and penalties. As such, I am backing the draw here.
