European Acca Tips – 3rd – 5th May

Last week’s semi finals first leg ties produced some interesting results across the three European competitions, although sadly Leicester and West Ham didn’t do the business for us to land another acca win.

In the Champions League, Manchester City and Real Madrid played out a 4-3 classic at the Etihad in what was one of the finest games of football I have seen in many a year. Here’s hoping that the second leg on Wednesday this week is just as good.

On Wednesday, Liverpool took a big step towards the final in Paris when they beat Villarreal 2-0 at Anfield. An own goal deflected past the keeper by Estupinan and then a Sadio Mane finish put the Reds on course for another final appearance if they can avoid a 3-goal defeat in the second leg.

Thursday’s games were a little less successful for British teams. in the Europa League, Rangers went down to a 1-0 defeat against Red Bull Leipzig in Germany and West Ham also lost to a German side, going down 2-1 at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Then in the Europa Conference League, Leicester were held 1-1 at home by a dogged AS Roma, while in the other game Feyenoord defeated Marseille 3-2 in Rotterdam to set up an interesting second leg in the Velodrome on Thursday.

Second leg games are generally more open than first leg ties as teams know what is required, so here are my tips for the games this week.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 3rd May

Villarreal (0) v (2) Liverpool – Away Win

Villarreal have the unenviable task of trying to do something that nobody has managed to do for a long while – beat Liverpool by three goals. Watford managed it in 2019 and Man City have done it a couple of times when the Reds were not at their best, but this season, Klopp’s team have lost just three times in all competitions, all by one goal. The Spanish side also had just one shot in the game last week and while they will be more adventurous at home, that will of course leave gaps at the back for Liverpool to hit on the counter and in fact, I think that is precisely what will happen. We’ve seen Liverpool look devastating away from home in Europe this season and I can see the Reds landing another win here to reach the final.

Bet Analysis: Wednesday 27th April

Real Madrid (3) v (4) Manchester City – Away Win

I can’t remember a game that I have enjoyed as much as this game as a neutral in many years. What a fantastic advert for football it was and despite Manchester City bossing the game for long periods, Real Madrid are still hanging around. Despite that, I still make City the very strong favourites to progress here. Real need to score and as we saw against Chelsea, this defence will give teams chances. CHelsea scored three times in the Bernebeu and I can see this City team being able to match that number here given how creative and clinical they are. City may ship one or two in reply, but I still feel the English side will earn the victory here.

Bet Analysis: Thursday 28th April

E.Frankfurt (2) v (1) West Ham United – Away Win

This is the game that I have had most doubts about from my selections this week. From the first leg, it was clear that had West Ham been just a tad more clinical, then they would go into the second leg at least level, if not in front. Frankfurt though looked very dangerous on the counter attack and they are a team that seems much better suited to away legs in Europe as their results show. At home Frankfurt have won just one of five European ties and I think West Ham can capitalise on that as they did against Lyon. Sure, they will need to be more clinical in front of goal but I think they can do that and perhaps land the win they need to at least force extra time.

AS Roma (1) v (1) Leicester City – Draw

Another tie that I can see going to extra time is the game between AS Roma and Leicester in the Europa Conference League. The first leg was an interesting one with Roma taking the lead thanks to a fine counter attack finished by Pellegrini, only for Leicester to put the Italian side under a lot of pressure before Lookman grabbed an equaliser late on. The Foxes won’t be too perturbed going into this game level. They were level with PSV in the quarterfinal and won in Holland to progress, but I feel Roma will be a tougher nut to crack. That said, i feel Leicester have the quality to at least match the Italians score in the second leg and in doing so take the game into extra time.
