Matchday 2 EPL Accumulator – 21st & 22nd August

Well, I was delighted to see the return of the Premier League last week, but not so enamoured with my return of just one correct result in my acca picks.

Still, with no form to go on other than what happened last season and over pre-season, the first week of action is always tricky, especially when you don’t focus on the games that have an obvious winner to back (such as the Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd matches).

With a week of results behind us, we have at least that to help us through the second matchday and as things settle down over the first few weeks of the season, I am sure I will start to hit more right selections than wrong.

This week sees some very interesting games including Everton’s trip to Leeds, Liverpool taking on a Burnley side that they have not beaten in the past two attempts at Anfield, and of course on Sunday we have the big London derby as Arsenal host Chelsea in what is already a big game for both teams.

And of course, Nuno Santos goes back to Molineux with his new team Spurs to face his old team Wolves in what should be another intriguing game.

With so many matches to pick from, I’ve gone for the four games below for my acca this week! Here’s hoping we can celebrate a win to kick off the season in style.

Bet Analysis: Saturday 21st August

Aston Villa v Newcastle United – Home Win

After losing away to Watford, Aston Villa will want to bounce back at home to a Newcastle side that faltered after half time following a good first half display to lose 4-2 at home to West Ham. Of the two teams, I think Aston Villa have the best chance to land the win. Not only are they going to be playing in front of their home fans, but they have invested some of the money raised from the sale of Jack Grealish very wisely. They didn’t quite click in that first half against Watford but did much better later on in the game and if they can continue that form, then I think they should be confident of picking up three points here against a Newcastle side that ran out of steam and ideas in the second half against West Ham.

Leeds United v Everton – Draw

A tricky one to call this. Leeds were hammered last week by Manchester United, for the second time in two seasons at Old Trafford, whereas Everton were excellent in coming from 1-0 down to beat Southampton 3-1 at Goodison Park. Rafa Benitez is a master tactician too, so he isn’t going to be fazed facing Marcelo Bielsa’s attack-minded Leeds United team. However, I think Manchester United showed Leeds have a number of defensive frailties that Everton can prey on, especially on the counter attack. That said, Leeds at home with Elland Road behind them is a tough ask for any team to earn a win and all things considered, I think a draw is the most likely result.

Bet Analysis: Sunday 22nd August

Wolves v Tottenham – Away Win

Nuno Santos returns to Molineux in just his second game as Tottenham manager and it is going to be interesting to see what kind of reception he receives. It will also be interesting to see whether Harry Kane starts, is on the bench, or perhaps on his way to Manchester City. I think Spurs will win the game, and if Kane plays then they should win more handsomely, but my gut feeling is that he will, at best, be on the bench and is probably most likely not to play again as his standoff with Daniel Levy continues. I am not too sure Wolves will be as strong under their new manager Jorge Leto and I think Spurs can take advantage here.

Arsenal v Chelsea – Away Win

Arsenal have a great record against Chelsea in recent games, winning all their last three over their London rivals, in fact Chelsea’s record over Arsenal over the last 14 games or so is pretty poor. So advantage Gunners you would think. Well, I have to query that as Arsenal were, to be frank, utterly awful away to Brentford, and this Chelsea team were handy winners over Crystal Palace and are the current Champions of Europe. Arsenal can win this of course, but I think it is far more likely that Chelsea will be the team celebrating on Sunday night.
