Tuesday’s Champions League Acca – 11th December

The final set of Champions League Group Stage fixtures begins tonight with a number of crucial matches, including two games that will see British teams battling for their Champions League lives beyond the current campaign.

Tottenham face the prospect of having to try and at least equal or better Inter Milan’s result tonight to go through. However with Inter at home to bottom club PSV Eindhoven and Spurs facing a daunting trip to Barcelona, that is going to be no easy task.

Similarly, Liverpool face the prospect of having to beat a very strong (and so far unbeaten) Napoli side at Anfield by two clear goals in order to secure their passage into the knockout phase. The Reds have been shocking on the road in the Champions League this season, but their form at home is much better, even so this is going to be no easy task.

Of the two nights of action, I think more drama will unfold on Tuesday with a higher proportion of games where teams still have plenty to play for and the qualification issues have not been decided, which should hopefully avoid too many teams playing weakened teams (which can skew the result one way or the other).

Let’s hope we can round off the Champions League Group Stages with a positive result tonight with this fourfold accumulator involving both the Premier League teams taking part in this evening’s fixtures.

Bet Analysis: Tuesday 11th December

Barcelona v Tottenham – Home Win

With Tottenham knowing that they have to match or better Inter Milan’s result, and the fact that Inter are likely to win at home to PSV Eindhoven, Spurs now face the uneviable task of getting three points from a trip to the Nou Camp, something no team has achieved in the Champions League since 2013. Hope may come in the form of Barcelona, having already qualified, could rest some key players and if that is the case Spurs still have a chance. However, with such a talented squad and home advantage, even a slightly below strength Barcelona are a formidable obstacle. As such, although I feel this will be close, I cannot back against the home side winning here, which would mean the Europa League for Spurs in the New Year.

Club Brugge v Atletico Madrid – Away Win

This is an interesting game as although Atletico Madrid along with Borussia Dortmund have already qualified from their group, the top position is still very much up for grabs. With Dortmund likely to beat a struggling AS Monaco at home, that means Atletico need to get a result in Belgium against a Club Brugge side who have already clinched a Europa League spot. I think this will be closer than a lot of people feel and although I am tipping Atletico Madrid to land the win, I think it will be by one of their trademark 1-0 wins as this Brugge side has shown it has a bit of spark, even against the top sides in Europe.

Liverpool v Napoli – Home Win

When Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005, to get through their group stage they needed to beat Olympiakos at home by two clear goals. After going 1-0 down, they came back to score three second half goals including the famous “Oh You Beauty! What a hit son! What a hit!” Gerrard strike to clinch the third goal. Now the Reds face the same situation. Only a two goal win over Napoli will be enough to put them through and against the unbeaten Italian side, this is going to be a big ask. I can see Liverpool winning the game, however I can see Napoli scoring too and that means the home side will need three goals. Whether they can do that I am not sure, but it is sure to be a packed and vociferous Anfield hoping that lightning can indeed strike twice.

Inter Milan v PSV Eindhoven – Home Win

Like Spurs, Inter know exactly what is required of them this evening to go through, simply better Spurs result. With the English side in the Nou Camp facing Barcelona, that gives Inter every chance of do9ing so, but the Italian side can’t get hung up on events at the Nou Camp and all they can do to give themselves every opportunity to progress, is to pick up the win at home to PSV. After having beaten PSV on the road, they should be well capable of that at the San Siro. I’m backing Inter for a comfortable home win here.
